Pregnancy and the Fontan Operation
The cardiovascular changes involved in pregnancy are especially risky for the Fontan patient. In addition, the medications commonly prescribed to control arrhythmias and other problems may have adverse effects on the developing fetus.
Anyone with congenital heart disease, repaired or non-repaired, should consult with their cardiologist prior to becoming pregnant to review the risks. |
